Our journey to become a self-sustainable eco lodge

As part of Plastic Free July, we reflect on our journey as we endeavour to become a self-sustainable eco lodge.

When we first started conversations about creating Sarara Camp here in remote Northern Kenya, we knew that we'd have to find alternative ways to do even some of the most simplest tasks.

We embraced the "creative constraints" and designed an eco lodge where we endeavour to be self-sustainable and minimise waste as far as possible.

  • Today, Sarara operates entirely off the grid and relies exclusively on solar system for power.

  • We purchase all our fresh produce from local farmers, which are all stored in our natural charcoal fridge.

  • Sarara tables don’t have roses, but vases of dried grasses or feathers collected from the ground when we're out on bush walks.

  • Our kitchen is cling-film free. We love our washable dish covers, as well as our plastic-free sponges and dish scrubbers

  • When it comes to condiments, jams and nut butters - we buy in bulk or make our own and dispense into smaller glass bottles.

  • We don't have any plastic water bottles or straws. Up-cycled glass bottles and bamboo straws are at the order of the day.

  • Our rooms' bin liners are brown paper bags, and ear swabs are bio-degradable with bamboo stems.

These are just some of the little things we do to try and be better citizens of Mother Earth! 🌿
