Horseback Safari in Northern Kenya: what you need to know

We often get asked what it's like to venture into the wild with our bush ponies.

We hope this blog post answers some of those burning horseback safari questions you might have!

Why do a horseback safari?

An early morning ride to a bush breakfast is one of our favourite things to do at Sarara! It’s a wonderfully immersive experience, allowing you to quietly explore and experience the environment in a way that you can’t do from a vehicle. Long canters kicking up dust and weaving your way through the endless bush wilderness with wildlife around every corner.

What types of horses do we have at Sarara?

Our stable is home to 12 safari horses – a mixture of Arab-Ethiopian-Somali crossbreds, Appaloosas and thoroughbreds. The majority of these have been bred in Kenya. Our bush ponies all live in close quarters with wild animals, sometimes sharing a stable yard with giraffes and zebras! They are familiar with being amongst wildlife, and have wonderful characters.

Are horseback safaris for beginners too?

We have some wonderful horses that are perfect for complete beginners, making it possible for first-time riders and differently-abled riders to join in on this unique experience. For longer rides, we do ask that our riders be competent and confident since the bush can always throw in a surprise or two!

Is there a weight limit?

Yes, there is. For beginners, our weight limit is 80kg (176 lbs), and for experienced riders, it’s 90kg (200 lbs or 14 stone). Our group rides can accommodate from 1 to 8 guests, with a maximum of 6 adults.

What is the best time to go and how long are the rides?

Oh, without a doubt, our early morning rides are a must-do! Setting off at 7am and arriving just in time for a delightful bush breakfast is an experience like no other. And if you're more of a sunset chaser, our 5pm afternoon rides leading to a sundowner are a close second favourite! The rides cover about 5-10 km, so you're looking at roughly an hour or so in the saddle, depending on your pace.

Are horseback safaris safe for children?

Absolutely! We have four fantastic kids' ponies, all Ethiopian-bred and perfect for leading little adventurers. These gentle and calm ponies are wonderful with children, making it a truly incredible experience for the young ones!

Do we cater for disabilities?

Absolutely! For a gentle ride and leading, we have ponies with the perfect temperament.

What saddle types do we have?

We ride in the English style, using very comfortable English general–purpose saddles. We also have Australian stock saddles for a select few of the horses and ponies. Each riding safari is personally guided by Lenawalla or Lesoitia, with Katie and the rest of her team on hand to assist with the horses.

Can you combine a horseback safari with another activity?

Absolutely! For our more experienced riders, imagine heading out of camp in the afternoon and spending a night under the stars with your horse. It’s a unique adventure, cantering down the famous North Kenya dried river bed (lugga) or exploring the hills surrounding Sarara. It’s an unforgettable experience!
