Rediscover the peace of raw nature at Sarara Treehouses
Nestled in a hidden corner on the slopes of the dramatic Mathews Mountains in Kenya’s northern frontier, an ancient forest glade provides the perfect opportunity for an unforgettable stay high among the treetops.
Welcoming you into a lush green utopia on the edge of the region’s semi-arid savannas and plains, a continuous element of surprise awaits from your moment of arrival as Sarara Treehouses slowly unveils its magic and secrets.
COCOONED IN A TRANQUIL SANCTUARY
Connected by stilted wooden walkways, Treehouses’ eight beautifully appointed suites are raised up into the forest canopy – and each of them is tucked into its own unique treetop setting. Looking out onto dramatic views of the mountains, they’re set over expansive stretches of forest floor – where a variety of species roam freely underfoot.
Constantly connected to the rhythms of nature through deeply personal experiences, your senses are soon alerted to the arrival of wildlife – and the rustle of leaves may announce herds of elephant or buffalo strolling right underneath your tent.
Blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors, spacious solar-heated outdoor showers add to the thrill of being immersed in this wonderworld – where birdsong and the chattering of monkeys provide a natural soundtrack that matches the breathtaking views.
“It really is a treehouse! One can’t anticipate the surprise and delight at arriving to discover you really are going to be sleeping in a treehouse!”

THE FREEDOM TO EXPLORE
Time moves differently here, and a stay at Sarara Treehouses is not only an opportunity to return to nature – it’s an invitation to return to yourself and feel rooted as you connect intuitively with this ancient landscape.
Discovering this vast ecosystem alongside your dedicated Samburu guide opens your eyes to the beautiful journey of coexistence between the region’s wildlife and Indigenous community – and how both wildlife and local culture are cherished and thriving here.
“Hidden in the mountains and arid plains of northern Kenya lies a place of coexistence, community, and wildlife. It’s a place that heals the soul and gives hope for the future, while giving back to the land and the people who have lived here for generations.”
– Katie Rowe, Director of Conservation
From unrestricted game drives and horseback safaris to guided trail runs, rock climbing excursions, and bush meals and sundowners in spectacular settings, there are also unforgettable encounters like meeting the orphans at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary – the first of its kind in Africa!. Guests can also visit our Milk to Market Program, Nomadic Montessori Schools, Mobile Healthcare Program, and more!
With stories whispered in the treetops, and the region’s rich historical legacy echoing in these mountains and peaks – your Samburu guide connects you to one of Africa’s last remaining true wilderness areas through deeply personal guided excursions.
Highlights include stepping out early in the morning on guided hikes into the mountains, learning more about the area’s rich plant life, as well as their medicinal uses in local culture. Walking along elephant trails, you’ll perhaps even encounter the gentle giants along the way.
And then there’s marveling at the endemic Kenyan Giant Cycads towering along rocky outcrops like guardians, as they have been for ages. The origins of these living fossils are estimated to stretch as far back as 280 million years. They’re considered one of the oldest plant types on the planet, and are critically endangered.
Every hike includes a scrumptious, freshly made breakfast and piping hot coffee or tea – coupled with a picture-perfect view.
It’s impossible to not be stirred by a visit to the nearby Singing Wells, where Samburu warriors dig wells along dry riverbeds to reach water for their cattle in an ancient tradition that’s been passed along generations. This highly personal ritual involves an extraordinary feat of teamwork as the warriors form a human chain passing water up from deep in the earth while singing in unison. It’s an honour to quietly witness them work and listen to the hypnotic melody of their songs – and encounters at the wells leave visitors profoundly transformed.

Philip has been the lodge manager at Sarara Treehouses for the past eight years, and his favourite thing about this special ecolodge is the feeling of being completely immersed in nature. “Waking up surrounded by the sounds of the bush, with nothing but open sky and wildlife around you, is truly magical.”
Q If you had to give Trees a Samburu name – what would it be?
A Nkoror – meaning a house elevated in trees. It signifies a structure built above the ground – blending in with nature, offering safety, seclusion, and a unique vantage point to observe the surroundings.
Q Top five animals who visit the camp?
A Elephants, giraffes, genets (they love the treehouse life too!), kudus, dik-diks, impalas
Q Best sound at night?
A The distant roar of lions. It reminds you that you’re in the heart of the wild, yet perfectly safe in your treehouse.
Q Which big birds often fly over the camp?
A Hooded vultures, martial eagles, bateleurs, and more glide overhead. The birdlife here is incredible!
Q Most surprising thing for guests to discover?
A That the tents are truly elevated – giving a real treehouse experience, with animals walking freely underneath. Also, the level of comfort and hospitality in such a remote setting often surprises people!
“This was one of the most magical experiences of my life. It's been six months since I stayed at Sarara Treehouses, and I already dream of returning. The immersive tents in the treetops were extremely comfortable and well-appointed. If you enjoy glamping in pristine wilderness, this is your place. I woke up listening to birdsong and spent my days on expertly guided tours and evenings eating delicious food and enjoying adventurous sundowners.”
