Milk Mamma’s leading the way
The Milk Mammas visited a bank for the first time and withdrew money from their own accounts
The wonderful Milk Mamma's from the Milk to Market program have been getting paid upon each delivery of milk and The Sarara Foundation has set up bank account for each of them.
Just over a week ago, the women were all taken to nearby Wamba, where they withdrew money that they earned, but doing so from their very own bank accounts. This was their first time in a bank too.
It was a powerful sight!
Previously the "hidden hands" of the pastoral-economy, these women have been playing a vital role which has gone unseen and uncompensated, are now doing business by selling milk, earning an income and setting an inspiring example for their daughters and the next generation of of Samburu women.
At The Sarara Foundation, we focus on equipping the indigenous Samburu community to continue to live alongside wildlife, retain and celebrate their unique cultural heritage and live sustainably and prosperously in a modern world for many generations to come.
