From sunrise to starlight – Sarara’s immersive experiences

Tucked away in the remote beauty of Northern Kenya, Sarara is more than a safari destination – it’s an invitation to step into a world where a rugged wilderness, age-old culture, and spirit of connection weave into unforgettable journeys.

Here, our three unique eco-lodges and exclusive-use tented camp offer the perfect springboard for deeply immersive experiences, and days filled with authentic encounters.

GUIDED BY NATURE

Once you’ve glimpsed the beauty of Namunyak through the eyes of those who are born of this land, its warmth will remain part of you long after you’ve left.

As the passionate custodians of this wilderness – who’ve coexisted with its wildlife for centuries – the Samburu’s age-old wisdoms, stories, and traditions fold seamlessly into the dramatic rivers, valleys and mountains that sweep through its semi-arid terrain.

Alongside those who have loved Kenya’s northern frontier for generations, the intricate layers of Namunyak will slowly unfold. Through their knowledge and insight, you’ll discover how everything from the smallest of creatures to seasonal rains are connected – as well as the meaning of truly living close to the earth.

ON THE EDGE OF THE WILD

With unrestricted guided game drives, including at night, Sarara’s wildlife viewing is nothing short of spectacular. From Nanunyak Conservancy’s vast numbers of key species to the wildlife-dense wider Samburu Ecosystem, the area’s rich biodiversity opens a window to everything from rare small animals and iconic birds – as well as the thrill of seeing predators like leopards, lions and cheetahs up close.

Each game drive delivers its own magic and surprises, and for those yearning for even more excitement, helicopter safaris high above the Mathews Range and desert landscapes provide an otherworldly perspective.

Surrounded by nothing but wilderness and closer to the ground, an overnight Fly Camping adventure in a lugga (dry riverbed) is a chance to sleep under the stars – lulled by the sounds of the bush, and warmed by stories of this ancient land around a crackling campfire.

TRADITIONS THAT ENDURE

One of the highlights of a stay at Sarara is the privilege to walk to the Singing Wells to witness a sacred ritual of one of Africa’s most culturally intact communities. The reverberating sounds of morans (warriors) singing together while they dig into the dry earth and pass water for their livestock from hand to hand are truly unforgettable.

Visits to manyattas are informal opportunities to meet Samburu families while stepping into the daily life of a homestead. For a joyful introduction to a vibrant and symbolic part of Indigenous life, guests can also join a circle of Samburu Beading Mamas. Meeting the region’s master blacksmith, who was trained by his grandfather in this ancestral trade, is an eye-opening experience, as is seeing him forge traditional metal implements over an open fire.

Then there’s the soulful magic of a Ngoma – an evening celebration of Samburu song, dance and rhythm held in a riverbed under the stars. The colours, sounds and energy of this much-revered ceremony leave a lasting impression and are often combined with a bush dinner

TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE

But Sarara isn’t just about observing, it’s also about learning from the land, and making a meaningful difference. Some of the most powerful memories guests take home come from seeing  the positive impact of community-led conservation and change first-hand:

  • Visit Reteti Elephant Sanctuary The world’s first community-owned elephant sanctuary, where orphaned calves are raised with care and purpose.

  • Meet the Milk Mamas Be inspired by the Samburu women who find economic independence by selling goat milk to nourish Reteti’s young elephants.

  • Join our Nomadic Healthcare Team as they deliver essential care to remote communities.

  • Step into our Nomadic Montessori Schools where children receive best-in-class education rooted in Samburu culture – shaping the region’s future.

MAKING AFRICA’S HEARTBEAT YOUR OWN

Whether you’re exploring Sarara’s diverse hiking trails, running along ancient elephant paths, or identifying bird calls at sunrise, every moment outdoors is an invitation to slow down. With every step, the subtleties of the land are revealed – as the stories of Samburu are written in tracks, the uses of medicinal plants, and the soothing hush of this wide-open wilderness.

For the more adventurous, rock climbing routes near Sarara Treehouses and Reteti House offer fresh perspectives and more opportunities to stretch those limbs, while intimate horseback safaris come with a complete sense of freedom and bring you eye-to-eye with wildlife.

JUST BREATHE IT ALL IN

No journey is complete without taking the time to simply rest, take it all in, and enjoy some downtime.

Sarara’s expert Samburu therapists harness the restorative qualities of natural oils and peaceful outdoor settings to maximise the effects of our personalised massages. And when night falls, there’s the delight of marvelling at completely unpolluted skies – and tailormade stargazing experiences guiding you through the secrets of the galaxy.
