Samburu Community Receives Emergency Response Training
Living and working in a remote location like Kenya’s northern frontier comes with many challenges affecting people’s wellbeing and health – and it’s crucial for members of our staff and the community to have excellent first-aid skills!
We were so thrilled to once again welcome the incredible team from the Global Foundation for International Cardiac and Community Services (Global FICCS) when they visited us recently to host training sessions.
Aimed at increasing health awareness and knowledge, as well as critical emergency response skills, the sessions provided an excellent foundation for everyone who attended, and there was no shortage of excitement among the participants – who included keepers from Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, Eco Rangers, teachers, community members, and more!
It was a privilege to learn from Dr. Parag and Dr. Erin, who focused on training community health champions to support our incredible Nomadic Healthcare team. By mastering Basic Life Saving (BLS) skills, they’ll be able to act as the first point of care before the health team reaches an emergency site.
In a landscape where the team has to cover great distances and contend with everything from flooded rivers to muddy roads and areas teeming with wildlife, this is particularly important as it could take a while to reach patients needing emergency care!
Key areas covered in the training included:
CPR
first aid for common injuries
sanitation, and
the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits
maternal care during and after pregnancy
the importance of hospital deliveries
debunking myths surrounding pregnancy
2024’s first-aid training was immensely fruitful and everyone agreed that each session was a huge success! We’re also deeply grateful for the generous donations made by Dr. Parag and Dr. Erin, who presented us with a range of medical equipment and medicine to the value of $1,000.
Our heartfelt thanks go to the Global FICCS team for their unwavering support and dedication to improving healthcare among the Samburu community in Namunyak. Their expertise and generosity help to improve our community’s health and wellbeing significantly, and we look forward to continuing this journey together!
